50 Years Young on a BMX

By admax on 21 August, 2009 in Personal Accounts

It’s been two years since I last chatted to you and soooooooooooooooo much has happened. 2008 was NOT a good year for me race-wise. In South Africa I had to race in the 40+ class against men (at the age of 49) and didn’t even feature – those guys are too fast. First time in my BMX career that I never qualified to the finals at any of the South African Champs.

At the World Champs in China I rode like a complete chop and also never qualified – rode 25+ Women’s Cruiser and should’ve made it through but … Having said that, I never lost my passion and still LOVE racing BMX. I am sponsored by Rob Cunnington from Cycles Africa, and ride an Intense Expert Cruiser.

2009 has been THE MOST AWESOME year for me. It began with the publication of my BMX book – BMX Xtreme Rush. Shuter & Shooter Publishers (where I work) have published the book and R5 from every book sold will go back into the development of BMX in South Africa.

My dream is to see kids on bikes having fun, with a goal and a passion to follow. I plan to get very involved in the development of BMX in rural areas throughout SA and hopefully Africa. BMX Xtreme Rush tells the stories of 3 of our local BMX riders – one of whom is South Africa’s first BMX Olympian – and the basics of BMX racing; getting started, jumping, berm tactics etc.

The book is a visual feast of photographs and ‘easy to read’ text which makes it accessible to all. It is guaranteed to encourage newcomers to the sport. The photographs and cover for the book were “given” to me, keeping the costs right down so that I was able to produce a full colour book and sell it for only R59.95.

My dream is for this little book to go into schools, libraries and anywhere where kids will see it – it’s aimed mainly at junior school kids. My plan is to approach corporates to sponsor the development programmes in various areas and buy the books for the local communities, where there is huge scope for empowering and uplifting youngsters and getting them involved in the fun and freedom of BMX racing. The book is available from the Shuters website or the BMX website. It will be available soon in book stores, and it is also available in Cycle Lab stores, and will be available soon in book stores countrywide, so watch this space …

In July I went to Adelaide to compete in the Worlds BMX Champs – what a blast!!!! I got World no. 2 in the 45+ Women’s Cruiser class – second fastest old bat in the world on a BMX bike – hee hee.

There were 17 women in my class so I had to qualify and ride semi’s before going through to the main – it was soooooooooooooooo awesome to have so many women competing – had to work really hard for my second!!!!

Next year the World BMX Champs are right here in Pietermaritzburg so that’s going to be quite an experience riding in my home town – my goal is World 1 (of course)!!!! Currently I’m in second place in South Africa against men – I’m the only Expert women who has always raced men.

I cannot understand why more women don’t race BMX. There is a new ruling worldwide – only 2 women make up a class so for any new comers be assured – you will only race women.

This is my 11th year in BMX and I’m still soooooooooooooooooo passionate about it.

While in Australia I stayed with my long time friend, Wendy – we’ve been friends for 38 years. To mark our friendship we had matching friendship symbols tattooed on our wrists – it was her first and my fourth tattoo.

The biggest milestone is the best one too – I’ll be 50 on the 24 August – so my ID book tells me. Don’t know what that’s supposed to feel like coz I’m actually 18 till I die! I train really hard in the gym, am a spinning instructor at Body Dynamics in Pietermaritzburg, which is part of my training schedule.

After all, age is just a number, not a state of mind. I love life and all the challenges it offers and tackle things with a positive, passionate attitude. I plan to race BMX till my legs can no longer turn the cranks.
