“She is free in her wildness, she is a wanderess, a drop of free water. She knows nothing of borders and cares nothing for rules or customs. ‘Time’ for her isn’t something to fight against. Her life flows clean, with passion, like fresh water.”
― Roman Payne
This weekend saw some of SA’S top Ultra trail running athletes compete in the Hout Bay Trail Challenge which doubled as South African Trail Championships in the picturesque village of Hout Bay, Cape Town.
Runners lined up on a cold and wet morning to tackle the gruelling 68 km course which had over 4500m of vertical ascent. They encountered some of the worst weather ever with rain, hail, sleet and sub zero temperatures at various parts of the route. Making this an extreme test for the girls but they showed grit and determination to finish this unforgiving course under the ten hour cut off.
In the ladies’ race Nicolette Griffioen continued her phenomenal form, winning and 7th overall amongst SA’s top men. Only sixteen minutes behind her came Chantel Nienaber, 2nd lady and 8th overall. Chantel proving that age is irrelevant if you have her passion.
Susan Erskine Don-Wauchope and Danette Smith came 3rd and 4th respectively and were in top 15 overall. Congratulations to Nicolette Griffioen , Chantel Nienaber on your outstanding performances.
