The number of South Africa women footballers securing European deals is growing at an incredibly rapid pace.
Former Bantwana striker Kelso Peskin has signed a one-year deal with French Ligue 2 side Stade Brestois 29 Feminines, becoming the fifth South African woman footballer to find a new home abroad in the last 10 days.
Others include Janine van Wyk (Glascow City), Amanda Mthandi (Deportivo Badajoz Femenino), Nothando Vilakazi (EDF Logroño) and Jermaine Seoposenwe (Sporting Braga).
An elated Peskin is raring to go and cannot wait to start her new journey with Stade Brestois.
“Yes, I’m very excited about my new journey. I am also happy that I will be back on the training ground soon and will be able to start playing. The club has given me a good opportunity and I thank them for this amazing opportunity,” said Peskin.
“I can’t wait to help them win games and grow as a player,” added the former CR Vasco Da Gama Ladies striker.
With the novel coronavirus halting sport globally, Peskin’s stint with another French side, Toulouse FC Féminines, was cut short after a decent start to the campaign.
“It was an exciting opportunity for my first pro contract. [Toulouse] I settled in well although the language was a slight barrier. Fortunately, I had a few teammates that could speak and understand English.
“I got to score a couple of goals and assists but sadly the coronavirus cut my playing time short. It was good to play in a European league though which was always one of my dreams.”
In an interview with Die Son newspaper, the 24-year-old said: “I am also happy that I will soon be on the training field again and will be able to start playing.”
“Rest assured, this is an opportunity I will definitely seize with both hands. It’s because I realise how happy and blessed I am to continue my career overseas again,” she concluded.
With the likes of Peskins and all the Banyana Banyana players plying their trade abroad, the future of South African women’s football shows great promise and we, at gsport, will be tracking their respective journeys with the utmost excitement.
