(Click here to download the scoresheet) 11.54 Kb), two other Super Six matches also played out over the same weekend, with KwaZulu-Natal women gaining supremacy over Gauteng, and Border overcoming Northerns in Pretoria.
In Saturday’s match between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal in Lenasia ( Click here to download the scoresheet 11.49 Kb), the home side won the toss and put visitors KZN in to bat, with C Botha claiming T Chetty’s wicket for an early break-through, but that was the only joy for Gauteng until Chetty’s opening partner, N Ramnath lost her wicket to a run-out by K Thabethe to break a 79-run partnership with L Anderson.
Anderson secured the day’s best innings with her half-century (54 in 70 balls) enough to place a high burden on the home side, despite KZN’s middle- and lower order only putting on a further 46 runs, althought they gifted 40 runs in extras.
Best bowling for Gauteng was M Terblanche with 3/25 in 10 overs breaking the middle-order’s resistance, her run-out of N Sole another feather in a distinguished cap.
Their turn to bat, Gauteng opened with a positive 42-run opening partnership between Terblanche and K Thomson, but with the first wicket came another three for the meager addition of 23 runs, and with Thomson and no. three C Schmahl each top-scoring with 32, it was a matter of time before the visiting bowlers snapped up the last 6 wickets for only 15 runs, Gauteng all-out on a Nelson in the 42nd over.
After having been bowled out for 170 in the 47th over, R Maharaj captured three wickets for impressive figures of 4.4 – 0 – 7 – 3 to lead KwaZulu-Natal to a 59-run victory, and a five-point win to see them rise to third place on the Super Sixes log ( Click here to download the Super Sixes log 10.56 Kb), placing pressure on Northerns, one point ahead on 12.
Sunday saw Northerns put in to bat at Sinovich Park in Pretoria by Border ( (click here to download the scoresheet) 11.41 Kb), and it was relentless bowling by A Taai (three for 18 in 9.3) bolstered by L Jordaan, M Kirchoff and E Pienaar each claiming two apiece that saw the home side’s strong batting side reduced to a despairing 87 all-out in the 40th over, no-one managing more than the 17 off 45 balls by no. four batswoman C van der Westhuizen, extras accounting for 22 to the total.
In response Van der Westhuizen claimed some revenge when she took K Soka’s wicket after C Labuschagne had removed A Nyiki for a total of eight on the scoreboard, but S Pillay steadied the ship with a steady 37 not-out in 91 balls to steer her side to a deserved win, despite the tight bowling of Northerns, where Van der Westhuizen took honours with her two for 19 in the allotted 10 overs in a losing cause.
Winning by four wickets, Border took a maximum five for their first points of the competition ( Click here to download the Super Sixes log 10.56 Kb), and settle as joint leaders with Free State of the bottom half of the log, with much to do to post a threat to the league’s top three sides.
Having brought 10 points in from the tournament’s preliminary rounds, Boland has opened a comfortable lead of eight points over second-placed Northerns after a bonus-point win in each of two encounters.
The players’ provincial league averages ( Click here to download the season’s player averages log 15.04 Kb) for the 07/08 season is still lead in the batting department by the recently-retired Johmari Logtenberg, who retains top spot care of a superb 70.00 average in the season, but Free State’s SM Benade’s two centuries added to two 50’s places her in a league above her piers.
Among the bowlers it is Northerns’ L de Beer and C van der Westhuizen who top the log with a combined 32 wickets between them, joined only by fourth-placed S Loubser of Boland in having conceded less than two runs per over, while Free Stater SM Benade who (adding to her batting prowess) can claim the most wickets in the competition to date, a total of 23 in eight matches.
Changes have had to be made to the remainder of the season’s fixtures in both the Super Sixes and Shield competitions, following the international cricket which will now be the order of the day in Stellenbosch from 18 to 24 February.
The ICC Women’s World Cup qualifiers will be fought out between South Africa, Zimbabwe, Papua New Guinea, Bermuda, Ireland, Pakistan, Scotland and the Netherlands, all set on taking one of two remaining slots in the ICC Women’s World Cup in Australia in 2009.
As a result, the Shield competition has been moved to 15 March – 19 March ’08, while the venue remains as Pretoria.
Changes to the Super Sixes schedule will now see the competition finishing on 8 March, a week later than originally intended, with action this weekend on what was planned as a bye weekend.
