Banyana Banyana have kick-started their African Women’s Championship campaign with a confidence-boosting 4-0 win over Algeria.
Veronica Phewa put her name in the history books by scoring the Championship’s fastest goal, scoring in the first minute to put Banyana Banyana one ahead.
Phewa scored again in the 34th minute, and she was joined on the scoring sheet by Nyandeni Nompumelo shortly before the half-time whistle.
Veteran Banyana star Jo-Anne Solomon sealed the game for SA with her second-half goal, cleaning out north-African powerhouse Algeria for a healthy goal-difference without conceding anything.
Hosts and Cup holders Nigeria also won their first match against Equatorial Guinea, but their 4-2 victory came hard-fought as a determined Equatorial Guinea did their best to spoilt the continent’s best.
SA officials will be keen to get a tape of the game to the Banyana coaching staff, who have virtually no information on this powerful team.
