On Friday 4th July, the Pirates Sports Club in Greenside opened their doors to around 100 eager bingo players, who were ably entertained by actor and entertainer Leroy Gopal, in an effort to raise funds for Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre in East London.
Team Dew Point Ladies Adventure Racing Team is an all-ladies team entered in the grueling 570km, 5-7 day, non-stop, unsupported, Bull of Africa adventure race, which is being held in the Eastern Cape from 9 – 16 August 2008.
While there are 44 teams entered in the race, with an equal split in local and international teams, there are only three all-ladies teams are entered, with Team Dew Point being the only South African representative team entered!
In an effort to give back to the communities that the race will be passing through, Team Dew Point decided to choose an organization that worked with the empowering and upliftment of the women of the Eastern Cape.
Being an all-ladies team, and with the race starting on Women’s Day, Team Dew Point wanted to draw attention to the needs of so many women who are victims of sexual abuse, domestic violence, rape and other gender based violence.
Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre has its head office situated in East London and was started by Dr Lesley Ann Foster in 1995. They are a non-profit, public benefit organization that focuses on awareness raising programmes and crisis intervention dealing with gender based violence against women and girls mainly in the Eastern Cape.
They offer counseling after rape and abuse as well as teaching women about their human rights and trying to educate the community to adopt gender equality. They also offer all related services concerning HIV/Aids to the community.
The bingo night, which offered prizes totaling R30,000 to the lucky guests, helped raise R13,000 towards Team Dew Point’s Masimanyane Fund.
