We mark Youth Day this year by reflecting on key #AdviceForSuccess from leading women in sport that is sure to inspire you to make the step up on your journey to sporting success.
Over the years, in almost every interview we do, we ask women in sport, to give advice to the next generation, and they always oblige. Topics vary from leadership to coaching, to sponsorship and mental health.
Today, we have picked out some of our favourites and we hope you find value in these nuggets of wisdom.
Kgothatso Montjane is one of the leading sportswomen in South Africa. Along with her performances on court, she is a leading brand, that attracts major brands as personal sponsors. Here’s her #AdviceForSuccess shared recently to help athletes who are seeking sponsorships.

Leadership extends across the spectrum. Whatever role you play in sport, leadership is usually at the core of everything we do. Head Coach of Six Gun Grill Western Province, Claire Terblanche, believes coaches need to display true leadership in order to achieve success.
“Leadership is best done when you stay true to yourself, the person you are is why you have formed and been placed in a position of leadership. Open communication and an open mind with teammates and management, allow for a communication flow between everyone within the team space, promoting positive team culture in the process.” – Claire Terblanche

Winning and losing is part of the game and sports psychologist, Dr Koketjo Tsebe, has advice for athletes when they encounter a bad day: “ If you’ve lost a match, you don’t have to let the way it ended define the whole experience. Consider some of your good memories and the big picture. Identify an area to improve, implement it and move on.” – Dr Koktejo Tsebe
Some of our favourite #AdviceForSuccess came on Youth Day in 2018 when these women in sport used their voices to inspire the youth. Hope these words inspire you as much as they inspired us!
Mapaseka Makhanya: “Youth Day is a reminder of where we come from as a country. Take every opportunity given, because the youth of 1976 paved the way … We are not fighting the battles they fought. The struggles we are fighting today, for equality in sports, will benefit our future sports stars.”
Simphiwe Dludlu: “Always remember that no one can be held accountable for your dreams except yourself. You have an opportunity to pave your path and serve your purpose. Make sure to understand your time to plough and invest in your dreams.”
Sunette Viljoen: “In life, you are going to be tested to the limit with injuries, defeats, heartache, disappointment, frustration, anger, doubt, fear, not performing to your abilities, sore and tired body, feeling of hopelessness and adversity. But you always have a choice. Am I going to back down and give up or fight back and prove everyone wrong? It is in these tough times that true Champions are made.”
