Amy Daley Promoted to Director Role at Nielsen Sports South Africa

2023 has started off on a positive note for Amy Daley, as the former Head of Commercial and Operations, has been promoted to a Directorship role at Nielsen Sports South Africa.

On Friday, 20 January, Nielsen Sports South Africa’s Managing Director Jean Willers revealed that he was proud to announce Daley’s latest achievement, saying: “Both Amy and Tumelo (Selikane) have come to intimately understand the space in which Nielsen Sports plays in South African sport and its role within the broader ecosystem, and it’s this understanding, along with the relationships they’ve built with our clients, that makes them incredibly deserving of their promotions.”

To find out more about her promotion, gsport Content Lead Celine Abrahams chatted briefly to Daley, who shared insights about her new day-to-day role and the impact she is aiming to make for Nielsen Sports South Africa and its clients.

Amy, congratulations on your new Director role at Nielsen Sports South Africa! How does it feel to have received this promotion?

I feel incredibly honoured and proud. When Jean Willers, the Managing Director of the business, discussed the opportunity with me towards the back end of last year, I was humbled that I had been given the opportunity and entrusted with this role.

Please tell us more about your new role and how if differs from your previous one as Head of Commercial and Operations.

This directorship, in terms of day-to-day roles, is a natural progression of my previous role as Head of Commercial and Operations, which I started a year ago. I spent the December / January break relooking the objectives and KPI’s of the Commercial and Operations Teams individually and collectively, to ensure key steps are taken towards the future of the business. Our Team has also grown this year by 3 new staff members, which allows for my role to expand while entrusting our team with key tasks and responsibilities.

What impact are you hoping to make in this role for Nielsen Sports South Africa?

Simplicity, Speed and Accuracy. I want to create a company that operates seamlessly, across all our platforms and processes – spanning from our commercial team to our operations team, and ultimately benefiting our clients, all while meeting targets and putting our staff members first.

As you have experience in Commercial and Operations, what advice would you give to a young girl who is aiming to get into this space?

Hard work pays off. And as cliched as that may sound, it is true. Decide what you want to do and go for it. And if your direction changes, that is okay as well. I started my working journey within the Sports Industry as an Intern in the Strategy Department at Octagon South Africa, I am now the Commercial and Operations Director for Nielsen Sports SA. If you asked me 15 years ago if I saw myself in a commercial and operations role, I would have said maybe to commercial, but no to operations. I look at myself now, and I am exactly where I am meant to be and enjoying the challenges I face daily.

Lastly, when you look at the path that your career is taking, what is your greatest ambition?

If you look at the definition of ‘ambition’ – a strong desire to do or achieve something, my response to your question follows on from my previous answers. I have a passion with the sporting industry, I have a passion for business and the success of a business, and I have passion for people development. My greatest satisfaction is to see our business and team members grow and succeed. My greatest ambition is directly linked to the impact that I am aiming to achieve in this role.
