2023 Momentum gsport Athlete of the Year and celebrated Banyana Banyana goalkeeper Andile Dlamini has been named the latest Laureus Sport for Good Ambassador, in an announcement in the buildup to the 2024 JP Morgan Chase in Johannesburg.
Dlamini exudes charm, grace and exemplifies self-actualisation. Not only is she one of South Africa’s top goalkeepers and an incredibly influential player in the Banyana Banyana and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies squads, she is also an incredible singer.
Growing up in the township of Thembisa situated on the East Rand of Johannesburg knows what it is like to work for everything she has achieved and to become one of the recognisable faces in Women’s football is no easy feat. Having cemented herself as one of the best shot-stoppers in Africa, she has inspired so many people to chase their dreams irrespective of where they come from.
Joining the Laureus Sport for Good Ambassador Program is something she holds close to her heart. “Being named the Laureus Sport for Good Ambassador, is huge for me. It means the world to me, I have so many plans. I want people to look forward to positive change. I want to build confidence and a better environment for the youth,” said Dlamini.
Laureus Sport for Good Foundation is structured to help young people overcome the limitations imposed by challenging social issues including poverty, homelessness, war, violence, drug abuse, discrimination, and AIDS. To do this they bring together recognisable faces in sport that people can relate to and who go above and their sporting code to make a difference in their communities and to the youth.
When asked how being named the Laureus Ambassador will effective positive change amongst the young girls, Dlamini said: “I can effect positive change by being a positive role model who engages with them. Working with the youth to solving their challenges and bettering their skill. Me being there for them when they need me will really inspire them and give them hope and faith that nothing is impossible #SportForGood.”
