FIFA has appointed Anoud Al-Asmari as the first Saudi Arabian woman international referee, as announced on Saturday, 7 January 2023.

Al-Asmari was appointed by the international football body as one of eight Saudis on the International Panel,  less than a year after the debut of Saudi Arabia’s first women’s national team.

Speaking on this achievement, the 34-year-old said, “I am happy to be the first Saudi female referee to receive the international badge in the history of Saudi sports.”

Al-Asmari’s appointment comes a month after the country made a bid to host the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026.

Saudi Arabia’s move to bid for the women-only event mirrors the nation’s efforts to unlock untapped potential and opportunities for women and girls across Asia.
