In Saturday’s 90km Makro Fujitsu Siemens Cycle Tour, the ladies started with the men, and all-in-all more than 1200 cyclists participated in the five tour categories, comprising the 2007 1km, 5km, 10km, 30km and 90km events.
The first major break came 50km into the race when two of the men’s cyclists broke to pull away at Fitchers Corner, but the remaining ladies in the bunch, Anriette Schoeman, Yolinda Erasmus and Charlotte van der Merwe reacted immediately to close the gap later after a hectic three-kilometre chase.
The next move was by climb specialist Schoeman, who made her move on the First Sister to leave Erasmus and Van der Merwe behind.
Not content to settle, Erasmus pulled away from Van der Merwe on the Second Sister, but Schoeman was still able to increase her time-gap on the both of them.
Then disaster however struck Erasmus, as the spokes of her front wheel broke following a collision with one of the men on the climb, which enabled Van der Merwe to past Erasmus, who was being assisted by officials.
Out in front, Schoeman took the Queen of the Mountain title on the last and Third Sister, and managed to stay in the lead to win, while third-placed Yolinda Erasmus also took the Vets Ladies 30-39 title.
