Anriette Schoeman (Proline Computers) showed great form this weekend when she won the Sportsade Cycle Tour in Port Elizabeth, with the licensed ladies started the 100km race with the men.
Schoeman was the only lady who managed to stay with the main bunch, when Conrad Viljoen launched a massive attack 20km into the race up the Schoemanmakerskop Climb, which ripped the bunch to shreds.
Bridget Rowe (Cambridge Harriers EL), Alta Havenga (Coimbra Cycle House) and Yolinda Erasmus (Pheiffer Cycles) were left behind, with the main bunch managing to open a time gap of 30 seconds 30km into the race.
The very strong South-Easter coming from the front caused problems, but Schoeman managed to go over the Maitland’s climb with the main bunch, for a 3-minute time-gap on the second-placed Yolinda Erasmus.
After the steep 2km Maitland’s Climb immediately followed by the notorious Three Sister Climb, the main bunch broke up into smaller groups, but Schoeman managed to extend her lead for a clear win in excess of 10 minutes.
Results for the 2007 Sportsade Cycle Tour in Port Elizabeth:
1. Anriette Schoeman 2.40.30
2. Yolinda Erasmus 2.51.44
3. Alta Havenga 3.07.23.
