American teenager Ashlyn Krueger has broken new ground in her young career, capturing her first WTA tour event title at the 2023 Japan Open in Osaka on Sunday, 17 September.
She had only ever won two tour-level matches in her career before this, reaching the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 grass-court event in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, earlier this year.
However, in Osaka, Krueger dominated the courts, winning five matches in a row – all in straight sets.
In the final encounter against No. 1 seed Zhu Lin, the 19-year-old pulled off a thrilling 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory to take the crown.
Speaking to the media after her win, Krueger said:
“I think I was very aggressive today (Sunday), playing a lot of really aggressive tennis and using my serve.”

“I think I just stayed mentally tough the whole time. Lots of aggressive shots and trusting in myself,” she concluded.
Krueger achieved her victory eight days after her fellow American Coco Gauff made headlines winning her first Grand Slam title at the US Open.
