Photo: SuppliedTop SA artistic gymnast Kirsten Beckett (17) has returned home after scooping silver in the Vault discipline at the FIG World Challenge Cup, held from 26 to 28 April 2013, in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Having just competed at the 2013 Doha FIG World Challenge Cup a month ago, SA’s top two Artistic Women’s gymnasts, Beckett and Claudia Cummins (17) from Johannesburg Gymnastics Club, continued their international preparation plan for the 2013 Artistic World Championships with encouraging performances in Ljubljana.

Both gymnasts performed extremely well, improving greatly from their Doha performance. Both attained a place in the Vault finals, with Beckett winning a silver medal and Cummins placing in fifth place in the finals.

With both girls still new to the World Challenge Cup circuit, these results are their best at an FIG World Challenge Cup to date.

The results were impressive as the Gold and Bronze medals were won by Elsabeth Black from Canada, and Thi Ha Than Phan from Vietnam, both who competed at the London 2012 Olympics. In addition, Thi Ha Than Phan placed 1st for vault at the 2013 Doha FIG World Challenge.

SAGF is proud of Beckett and Cummins’s achievements, and send their congratulations to the gymnasts and their coaches. We look forward to following the progress of our rising gymnastic stars, who have their sights set on the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
