Big Dome2Dome Turnout Expected

On-line entries for the PowerAde Dome2Dome Cycling Spectacular closed on Tuesday evening with a total of just over 5000 riders entering for the event, which already predicts and massive increase from last year’s entry total.

If you missed the entry deadline, you can still get your entry in either by faxing or posting your entry form to the race organisers or coming early on the registration days prior to the event, which takes place on 16 September at the Coca-Cola Dome.

The organisers are going to allow for another 2000 entries and the best way to secure your entry is to get to the Coca-Cola Dome at Northgate early on 14 and 15 September where race registration will take place. Registration coincides with SporteX, presented by Altech Netstar at the Dome.

With the mountain-bike event at the Dome falling away this year following the big residential development drive in the area, the road race is already up by 1000 entries from last year’s total.

The organisers are expecting another 2000 riders to enter which will bring the total entry tally for this year to 7000 road cyclists. Last year, including the mountain-bike race, the Dome2Dome attracted a total of 5000 riders.

“We are very happy with the entry total thus far,” said race organiser Leandro le Roux. “And we are confident that every single entrant is going to have a hassle free and utterly enjoyable ride in safe conditions next Sunday.

“We have spent a lot of time in many meetings with Metro Police over the past two weeks and it’s clear that they are taking the race very seriously and leaving no detail to chance to ensure rider safety. This is not just important for the fun riders, but also for the elite cyclists who are going to take part in the race, which is South Africa’s first UCI Africa Tour sanctioned single event,” he said.

Le Roux warned that riders still wanting to enter the event should get their entries in soonest to avoid the 7000 cut-off. “We were still taking entries at 300 per hour when we reached the cut-off last night (Tuesday).

“Our motto in the Dome2Dome is to grow steadily and to make sure the event grows with the numbers. We can accommodate up to 15 000 riders in the event, but we want to take it one step at a time.

“The response on entries thus far have proven that the Dome2Dome is a solid product with a bright future. And we’re slowly shedding our baby shoes on the way to becoming one of Joburg signature mass participation events,” he said.
