Blues Stumble before Striding on to NGS Finals

Proteas star Chrisna Bootha for the Galaxy Blues rises over Debbie Nieuwoudt (Starlight Jets) during the first semi-final of the 2011 Netball Grand Series, in Pretoria on 23 July, 2011. Galaxy Blues trailed at half-time, but stepped up their game to win 43-36 and stake their place for a chance at lifting the title cup in the tournament final. The Blues were well held by the Jets until the end of the second quarter when the third-placed team was in fact one goal ahead. But in the third quarter the experienced and star-studded Blues moved ahead for a lead the young Jets players simply could not make up in the final quarter.

The Blues’ Erin Burger, voted best player at the recent World Cup in Singapore, as expected was the star of the match and the difference between the two sides.

The Blues took control when she was moved to goal attack and never looked back after that. Annerette Viljoen also had a very good game for the winners.

For the Jets, who performed well throughout the season and gave the winners a good run until late in the match, the defence trio of Melanie de Lange, Debbie Niewoudt and Christelle Ellis caught the eye in another solid display by the losers.

In the second semi-final next weekend, the unbeaten Lightning Roses will be at home in Bloemfontein against the Black Diamonds from Soweto.
