SPAR Proteas captain and University of Johannesburg netball team coach, Bongi Msomi, expressed pride in her players’ growth after they reached the final of the Varsity Netball championships at [Stadium Name], Johannesburg, on Monday, 18 September 2023.
In the closely-contested match, eventual runners-up UJ produced a stellar performance in the final encounter against the University of Pretoria (Tuks).
Msomi’s charges fought back from 10 goals down to level the score at 51-all when the final whistle blew, to push the match into extra-time.
Jenny van Dyk’s Tuks side eventually prevailed with a narrow 2-goal win in the 63-61 match-off.
Since Msomi’s appointment in 2019, the Orange Army have qualified for back-to-back top four spots and this year in the final for the first time.
In an article on supersport.com, Msomi said: “I have to say credit to the girls. I had plans in my head when I came to UJ and to see them, this year, starting to materialise is really good. But they really had a tough time in this year’s Varsity Netball. There were so many things that happened that at some point I was questioning if I would be able to keep their heads level because we needed that.”
“They really stood strong and to play in their first final and play like they did, I cannot take this loss with a smile because I thought they were really good.”
