Captains in Contention for Varsity Netball’s Top Award

Three Varsity Netball captains have been nominated for the prestigious prize for the best student netball player in 2019.

Jeanie Steyn of the Madibaz, Monique Reyneke of NWU and Lefébre Rademan of the Kovsies has been revealed as the three nominees for Varsity Netball Player of the Tournament.

The three received the most votes from the participating coaches who had to nominate a player from one of the other seven teams. Rademan is a goal attack, Reyneke a goal defender and Steyn a goalkeeper.

Reyneke has bagged seven awards in the 2019 competition thus far – two FNB Player of the Matches, two Wimpy Moment Makers and three MTN Pulse Interceptors. Steyn walked away with an incredible five MTN Pulse Interceptor honours in her seven matches. Rademan received three accolades. One FNB Player of the Match and two Wimpy Moment Maker prizes.

Steyn, with 25 interceptions, is third on the overall list of stealing opposition’s possession. Reyneke is fourth with 24 interceptions. Rademan has shot 154 from 189 attempts for a goal average of 81.4% which is the fifth highest average for players with 150 attempts or more. Her 16 goals during the Powerplay is the most in the competition.

It is the seventh year a Kovsies player features among the three finalists for the Player of the Tournament. NWU have had six nominees, Tuks five, Madibaz two and Maties one.

Voting closes at 13:00 on Friday, 4 October and the winner will be announced at the final on Monday, 7 October.
