Leading Sports Marketing Agency, Stillwater Sports, is proud to announce that the inaugural Cell C Day Of Races powered by Reebok will support the Unogwaja Charitable Trust.
“We are excited to support the Unogwaja Charitable Trust,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “Unogwaja represents a message of hope while encouraging the act of unity. This fits in perfectly with the Cell C Day Of Races’ theme which is ‘find your fit’. Runners will be granted the opportunity to choose a start wave which suits them best. All entrants are encouraged to be social, take photographs and videos at designated points on route, share it to the event’s social media platforms and stand a chance to win magnificent prizes. The Cell C Day Of Races will introduce a new, fun format of road running to South Africa.”
According to John McInroy, Founder of the Unogwaja Charitable Trust, the Cell C Day Of Races is a great opportunity for South Africans to come together in an active and fun environment. “It is a privilege to be the official charity of an event that is fresh, fun and has an innovative vision. This event is for everyone. Unogwaja believes in taking that step and making a start, regardless of background or how fast or slow you run. We hope to see many people taking part in their red socks both in Johannesburg and Cape Town.”

More about the Unogwaja Challenge: An annual journey, the Unogwaja Challenge was started in 2011 with the goal of following in the footsteps of Comrades legend Phil Masterton-Smith. Affectionately known as “Unogwaja” which means the Hare in Zulu, Phil Masterton-Smith was involved in two of the closest finishes in the Comrades Marathon history. In 1930 he narrowly lost to the great Wally Hayward. The following year at the age of 19 he became the youngest ever Comrades winner when he crossed the finish line meters a head of Noel Burree. In 1933 Masterton-Smith couldn’t afford the train fare from Cape Town to run the Comrades Marathon, so he cycled over 1 700kms from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg in ten days, and on the eleventh day he ran the gruelling Comrades Marathon, finishing tenth overall.
In 2015 the Unogwaja Charitable Trust was founded to align the special message of the Unogwaja Challenge with their collective charity vision and mission. This vision can be broadly described under “education” but at its core is the willingness to support, enable and empower those people in our country who have not given up hope and who are already doing their best to make it better for themselves and the people around them, regardless of their circumstances.
The 2017 Unogwaja Challenge starts in Cape Town on Thursday, 25 May 2017 and finishes in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday 04 June 2017, consisting of ten days on the bicycle covering 1,657km between these two great cities, followed by the 89km Comrades on the eleventh day. Applications for the 2017 Unogwaja Challenge will open on Friday, 01 July 2016.
