The Tshwane Capital Classic, presented by the Tshwane Metro Police Department, goes into its third year with a tough 105km route option added to the cycling showcase on 3 February 2008.
The event will present three distances – 30km, 60km and 105km – and it really does present a viable option for every level of cyclist.
The event, which previously only offered a 60km route option, starts and finishes at the impressive Tshwane Metro headquarters next to the Pretoria Showgrounds, and the Metro is going all-out to provide ample parking and a slick experience on the route, with a huge contingent of officers.
Security officials from the Kerkstreet Central Improvement District will help them to secure the route, and these marshals have been a part of the event since its inception three years ago, proving well skilled in providing a safe passage for the expected 3000 cyclists on race day.
Apart from the climb at Saartjiesnek just before the Hartbeespoort Dam, which you have to do on the way out AND back, the 60km event is relatively flat.
The 60km ride heads out towards the dam on the N4 Highway from Pretoria to Hartbeespoort Dam and back again the same road.
The 30km riders turn short on the N4 at Atteridgeville to head back to the Tshwane Metro Headquarters while the 105km riders will do an extra 45km loop in the city and surrounds before crossing the finish line.
The 30km and 60km riders turn right (contra flow to traffic) into DF Malan Avenue to cross the finish line some 800 metres later and the 105km entrants turn left into DF Malan at the same point to start their 45km loop.
The 105km race goes up a tough drag to Wonderpark shopping centre and left out towards Brits before turning left again and back to the city. The road back to town includes the climb through Horan’s Nek.
In what promises to be a stunning experience, riders will pass through the Daspoort Tunnel, which will be closed to traffic on the day, before joining up with the N4 again.
The race starts at 06:00 at the Tshwane Metro Police Head office next to the Pretoria Showgrounds in Pretoria West.
Every finisher receives a medal and judging by the feast of lucky draw prizes that Tshwane Metro put up at the 2007 prize giving, the 2008 function will certainly be worth attending.
