It has taken Claredon High School for Girls 22 years to win a Gold Medal at the SA National Top Schools Tournament hosted in East London. The last time they tasted this sweet victory was in 1990.
The girls section of the tournament was played in a Round Robin format which meant that every game counted towards the overall results.
The Claredon first team headed into the final match with confidence as they were unbeaten, however trailing their opposition by 2 points. Claredon had to dig deep against Midstream High School from Northen Gauteng the leaders who were also unbeaten in the tournament ahead of the final.
The nail biter was a tight affair, but Clarendon showed spirit and played with grit and determination to eventually come out 15-8 winners .

vs Midstream Won 4-2
There were 14 teams participating, 8 boys and 6 girls. The girls category comprised of: Clarendon, Eunice, Epworth, Herschel, Midstream and St Mary’s.
Former gsport Awards Public Choice Winner, Awande Malinga’s 100% Win Record Untainted In East London
It seems every time she hits the court she can’t help but well… squash her opponents. South African Squash protégé, Awande Malinga produced another winning performance.
Malinga won all her matches 3-0 and those results helped her team secure a Silver Medal. The 2020 Momentum gsport Awards Public Choice winner, Malinga, representing Gauteng North Girls Schools remains unbeaten since 2019.

As the squash star gears up for the WSF Women’s World Junior Championships in France, these winning performances will certainly give her a boost in confidence. At the beginning of July 2022 she was awarded the Most Promising Female Junior Player and made it into the Best of the Rest team in her maiden Growthpoint Senior Interprovincial Tournament in East London.
The massively talented Malinga is one of the top six under 19 girls to receive the call-up to represent Team South Africa in August.
