Niritsa Rasolomalala forced a tight first-set advantage over Jade Pondicas in the Girls U18 Final of the Dunlop Gauteng North Junior Super
7 Tennis Tournament at the Groenkloof Tennis Stadium in Pretoria on Thursday, before dropping a single game in the second to
ease to the 2008 title championship in style 6-4 6-1.
All ranked contenders had been beaten in the
2008 championships’ earlier stages, with favourite Veronique Luksich losing to Jade
Pondicas 6-2 7-5, a sign of strong competition at the highest level.
Luksich and Pondicas redeemed themselves as a
pair in the doubles finals, when they beat no. 1-seeds M van Rensburg with Minette
Pienaar 2-6 6-3 10-2, in another battle marked by contrasting fortunes.
In the tournament’s U16 finals, top-ranked Welma
Luus demonstrated her class a fine victory over Lani Scholtz, before teaming up
with Marizanne Bouwer to outclass Z Bizinos with E Marx.
Zarah Razafimahatratra was another two-times
winner, when she beat Valeria Bhunu, also unseeded player, in the U14 singles
final, to beat Lenice van Eyk and A Luus in the doubles final, with singles
finals’ runner-up Bhunu at her side.
In the tournament’s U12 finals, Theresa van Zyl
teamed up with Nelise Verster as the top-ranked favourites to comfortably beat Kelsey
Joffe with Nicola Nel, after beating Chelsea Steward in a tighter singles
encounter, to lift the trophy twice on the day.
