The event hosted by South Africa’s leading women’s sport initiative celebrated four years of the #gsportGlobal chapter launched in Surat, India in 2019.
“Today (Saturday) was an amazing #gsportGlobal event here in Gqeberha, foreign media that are here to cover the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup have gathered to close the visibility gap in women’s cricket,” said gsport Founder, Kass Naidoo.
“So, we can complain about the lack of media coverage in women’s sport, but here are individuals who are doing something about it in their respective countries – England, Australia, India and South Africa so well represented here! Let’s keep closing the visibility gap and make a difference in women’s sport.”
Also in attendance was freelance journalist, Annesha Ghosh, who shared the importance of media coverage.
“This is my first women’s cricket World Cup as an independent journalist. In my view, media plays a very important role in terms of bringing more visibility to women’s sport and women athletes. And, that is where I think a lot is being done at this point, we are at a great juncture in the history of women’s sport globally.”
The message at the gathering was loud and clear, as media, we need to play our part to ensure the spotlight is shone brightly on women’s sport and we have no doubt that the current crop of journalists are going to raise the women’s sport flag high across the globe.
