Club100 Cadiz Diamonds squeaked home ahead of second-placed Limo Extreme Ladies by 41 seconds to claim the top racing women’s place in a nail-biting finish of the 2009 Coronation Double Century Cycle Challenge, over the weekend.

Cycle Lab SuperCycling Club was the first mixed team home in a very competitive six hours and 18 minutes, their 20-minute advantage over the Northcliff Cycles team a nod to the team’s efforts.

More than 2,340 cyclists and 230 teams participated in the 17th Coronation DC, which was held in- and around the scenic town of Swellendam.

Most cyclists agreed that the extreme heat (with temperatures of up to 35˚C) and the finish proved to be the major challenges. The new finish, called the Coronation Corridor, is a 1km climb with an average gradient of over 6%.

It is the second Coronation DC organised by the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. Co-Director David Bellairs, who completed today’s 202km race, said the heat made for very harsh cycling conditions. “We will certainly remember 2009 for the impact its extreme weather conditions has had on many of our cycling events,” he commented.
