Swim sensation Kaylene Corbett, South Africa’s BMX champion Miyanda Maseti, and rising boxing star Phiwokuhle Mnguni will battle it out for the Emerging Athlete of the Year title at the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards.
Corbett has been recognised for her incredible feat, which saw her add her name into the Commonwealth Games history books when she bagged bronze in the women’s 200m breaststroke.
“It is incredible just to be in the company of female athletes who are involved in the Awards. I am so grateful. At the end of the day, it is an honour to be apart of this group of women. I feel like Awards are just a small part of our journey as an athlete and we should be proud of ourselves and our improvements. Even if it means that you do not get recognition. You should celebrate the small victories as much as you celebrate your big ones.”
Since winning the 2021 Momentum gsport Awards’ SuperSport School Sport Star award, four-time SA BMX champion, Maseti, has continued to make her mark across the globe.
Maseti is humbled by the recognition and is proud that her hard work isn’t going unnoticed.
“Being a finalist is awesome, but there is some difficult competition in this category. Being grouped with the other two finalists is also unreal because of what they have already achieved in their sporting careers. Winning would be nice but just being recognized is cool enough too. I hope it will bring in some recognition and appreciation to and for all the hard work put in to being a finalist. Even if I don’t win, I know that the effort isn’t going unseen.”
Rounding up the category, Mnguni also got her name into the Commonwealth Games history books when she became the first South African female boxer to get a podium finish when she placed third.
Mnguni believes that this recognition will open doors not just for her but for an entire community of women in sport.
“Being a finalist means that my hard work is being recognized and honoured. I hope it will not only help me but the entire community in women doing sport. I believe that it will inspire all women out there to do their best as athletes, and I also believe that it will open doors for me.”
In 2021, Olympian Naveen Daries, walked away with the Emerging Athlete of the Year crown.
