As teams are busy gearing up for this weekend’s Coronation Double Century (presented by Cycle Lab), the organisers are looking forward to an interesting race featuring some big names, as well as a few interesting twists.
While the ladies’ racing teams have some strong contenders participating, it is the Helderberg Ladies team dominating with some highly experienced riders, including Jane Seggie, Ellane van Wyk, Hanlie Booyens, Michelle Lombardi and Erica Green.
Other teams to look out for are the Millennium Fast Chicks (with Helea Rossouw as team captain) and the Olympic & Atlantic Tri Ladies Racing team.
In an interesting twist, the start and finish have moved from Montagu and Swellendam, which is expected to make for a fascinating race, in a move wich means that the major climbs on the route will fall within the first 60km of the course.
Racing teams will therefore most probably ride quite conservatively during the first 60km and give it their all in the 100km stretch thereafter, but organisers and participants agree that the race will be won or lost in the last 40km with its undulating hills.
After their efforts, tired cyclists will be able to treat their weary muscles to a revitalising massage at the finish on race day, where three qualified sports massage therapists will be on standby.
Swellendam and the surrounding towns are already jam-packed with cyclists and supporters. If you haven’t yet booked accommodation for you and your team, you will still be able to pitch your tent on the Swellendam Show Grounds. Camping costs R40 per person and shower facilities are available. Call Marlize Gericke on 082 925 2560.
