Australian rookie sensation Stephanie Gilmore extended her lead at the top of the ASP Women’s World Tour rankings by beating reigning and seven-time World Champion Layne Beachley in the final of the Mancora Peru Classic on Saturday.

Gilmore now holds a substantial 526 point advantage over second placed Silvana Lima (BRA) with former world champ Sofia Mulanovich (Peru) more than 400 more points further behind in third spot on the rankings going into the final two events of the season in Hawaii.

South Africa’s Rosanne Hodge was sidelined by Beachley in Round 3 in the long left-breaking waves at the first World Tour event to be staged in Peru. The East Londoner remains in 14th position on the ratings, 230 points behind the cutoff 10th position currently occupied by Jacqueline Silva (BRA).

Hodge will have to call on all her undoubted talent to reach at least the quarter-finals of both the Hawaiian events, or a semi-final in one, to qualify for another year on the elite level tour.

The two remaining tour events are the Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach from 23 November to 6 December in Hawaii, and the Billabong Girls Pro in Honolua Bay from 8 to 20 December, also in Hawaii.
