Phumla Magidigidi doesn’t look like she could hurt a fly. At around 1,5m small she is so soft-spoken that it’s a complete surprise to learn that she recently won the title of South African Novice 2006 in bodybuilding.
“It takes a women with courage to build a body”, says Phumla, who handles the administration of the Edu-Loan section of the Department of Finance.
She took an interest in body building after joining the University in 2003 and since 2004 has entered a number of competitions.
To date she has won 15 trophies and was awarded four certificates of recognition. She says that these are the incentives that keep her committed to the sport.
Although she is extremely passionate about the sport she is quick to point out that not only does it require a disciplined exercise routine but also a rigid diet and special foods. Phumla spends one and a half hours daily training at the Mthatha Gym.
“The Xerox company has been a helping hand in facilitating some of my sports career success through sponsorship, which I acquired with the help of Mr. Joe Lekay (head of the WSU Mthatha Reprographics division)”, she said.
Phumla is ambitious and is confident that with more sponsorship she will be able to achieve her goal of being World Champion in her division in five years – proof that dynamite does indeed come in small packages.
