Easterns Upset at Kaplan Cup

Easterns caused an upset on the first day of the 48th annual inter-provincial Squash Championships, when they ousted second-seeded Northerns 16-7 on the first day of the PWC Kaplan Cup.

Easterns were spearheaded by world number 17 Annelize Naude, who beat top-seeded Farrah Fenner in clean sets, and World Masters 40-44 champion Angie Clifton-Parks, who cleaned out highly-rated Viv Doeg by the same margin.

Nicola Helwick (E) started off with a bang when she outplayed Sonia Pinter, but Sonika Fritz then levelled for Northerns, defeating Lindy Jordaan 3-2 in a close encounter.

Cara Willoughby gave Northerns a 2-1 lead when she defeated Michelle Kohne in straight games, and when Clifton Parks beat Vivienne Doeg 3-0, it was left to Naude to clinch the tie with a straight game victory over Naude.

Gauteng were aided by Diana Argyle and Claire Nitch in their faultless 20-3 victory over KwaZulu-Natal, and defending champions Western Province notched a 20-4 win over Eastern Province, but the individual matches produced tough exciting squash.
