Team USA’s Erin Jackson is leading the way in speedskating as she surged to a historic gold in the women’s 500m race at the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

The 29-year-old, who went off in the penultimate pair from the inside lane on Sunday 13 February, completed the all-out sprint for one and a quarter laps of the oval in a time of 37.04 to move into gold medal position.

Her victory has been etched in the global showpiece’s history books as she is believed to be the first black woman to win gold in any individual event.

Speaking on her win, Jackson said: “Hopefully, we’ll see more minorities, especially in the USA, getting out and trying these winter sports. I just hope to be a good example.

“This medal means so much. It has been a tough couple of years and a tough beginning for this year. For this to come around like this I am so happy,” she added.

Jackson is currently the top-ranked 500m sprinter in the world with four wins in eight World Cup races this season.
