It’s Oscar Month and everyone is
getting hyped up about the hottest movies to hit the circuit and the gorgeous
stars that make it all happen. In South Africa, when you think about showbiz,
one of the first names that spring to mind is Nicky Greenwall. This
entertainment presenter was talking up celebrities even before the latest hype
that has seen the entertainment industry explode in popularity.
Nicky is blonde, gorgeous, and
super smart. Not only is she the face of The
Showbiz Report on ETV, she is executive producer of the show, which has an
audience of 1.5 million views, so by the sounds of it, she’s doing a pretty
fine job. She has had the honour and privilege of covering the Oscars, the
Cannes Film Festival and London Fashion Week.
And as if Nicky hasn’t achieved
enough, this go-getter is preparing to launch a new show called The Style Report on The E-News Channel
in April.
Nicky, whose favourite
international celebrity is Cate Blanchett and locally she admires Zola and
Pieter Dirk Uys, is also looking forward to expanding her production company, Greenwall Productions and she writes for
a selection of magazines.
So, who are her picks for Oscar glory this year? "I think
Sean Penn will probably win Best Actor for his role in Milk and I think best
actress should go to Meryl Streep for Doubt."

about largely unnoticed, we beg to differ. Nicky has a striking presence and
turns heads whenever she appears on the social scene.
She used to be a "vintage girl"
but Nicky admits nowadays she opts for quality rather than quantity. Her
favourite brands include Top Shop, Zara and Tom Ford and her style icons
include Cate
Blanchett, Chloe Sevigny and Blake Lively.
Her style advice to women struggling to find their groove
is to spend more time on hair and makeup rather than what you wear.

Nicky, you have become the face of Showbiz in South Africa,
how did that come about?
I pitched a show to ETV 7 years ago and I guess they liked
it… cause I’m still here!
Tell us about some of your most amazing experiences as a
showbiz reporter?
Some of the best experiences I have had are when I get to
see or understand how everything related to Showbiz really is "smoke and
mirrors". I think some of the highlights of my career so far have been covering
The Cannes Film Festival, The Academy Awards and London Fashion Week.
How involved are you in the overall production of The
Showbiz Report on etv, and how has the public responded to the show?
I’m the Executive Producer of the show which means I manage
a small team that helps me put the show together every week. My official titles
are writer, producer, and host but it’s such a small team that everyone has to
do lots of jobs at once. We have an audience of 1.5 million viewers – so I
guess we’re doing ok!
What are your other career projects?
I’m launching a new show called The Style Report on The E-News
Channel in April. I won’t host the show – but I will produce and direct it –
really looking forward to getting it out there and expanding my production
company (Greenwall Productions). I also work as the official entertainment
correspondent for the E-news Channel and I occasionally write for a selection
of magazines.
Why is the world so hooked on celebrities?
I think for the most part it’s escapism – they say the best
way to forget about your own problems is to hear someone else’s. But on a
really base level I think people are just drawn to images, music and ideas that
make them feel good. You can’t explain why watching people on a red carpet is
so mesmerising – it just is. (for some people… others prefer cricket!)
How do you deal with being in the public eye?
I don’t really feel like I am in the public eye. I prefer
to be "the commentator" rather than "the commentated on". While I have
interviewed lots of people who really struggle with being "well known" – my
experience hardly compares. No one really notices me that much so it’s never
been a problem.
Who are your favourite local and international celebrities?
I’m a big fan of Cate Blanchett. I think she handles
herself really well in public situations and she always comes off as sincere.
As far as local celebrities are concerned I think Zola has done a remarkable
job by bringing people together for a common goal and I think Pieter Dirk Uys
is a national hero.
You’ve had the opportunity to go to the Oscars before,
what’s it like?
Very few people believe me when I tell them this – but it’s
really no more glamorous than your average Matric Dance. You won’t believe the
difference good lighting and a few nifty camera angles make. Having said that
it is of course a very well organised event – but honestly nothing to get too
excited about. In my opinion The Cannes Film Festival is far more exciting.
Who are your favourites to pick up Oscars this year?
I think Sean Penn will probably win Best Actor for his role
in Milk and I think best actress should go to Meryl Streep for Doubt.
Kate Winslet will probably take home best supporting
actress while Heath Ledger is definitely the favourite to win Best Supporting
Actor.
With you job comes the glitz and glamour, how would you
describe your personal style, and how has it evolved over the years?
I used to be very much a "vintage" girl. I liked shopping
at second hand shops – but over the last few years I seem to be buying quality
rather than quantity. I think it’s a sign I’m getting older – but I usually
choose comfort over fashion these days – which isn’t necessarily a good thing!
Who are your favourite local designers?
I like Marion
and Lindie, Kluk CGdT and Lunar.
What are your favourite clothing brands?
Top Shop, Zara, Tom Ford.

What is your style advice to women struggling to find their
style groove?
Spend more time on hair and make-up than on your outfit.
Good hair and make-up makes all the difference – what you wear isn’t that
important.
What is always in your handbag?’
Pens, lip balm and my wallet!
Where are your favourite places to shop for clothes?
Zara. 89% of my wardrobe is from Zara. I just can’t help
myself!
Do you have a beauty routine?
No. I like going to spas once in a while to get a pedicure
– that’s about it.
How do you keep fit?
I run and I practise Yoga.
What are your favourite spectator sports?
I know this is probably the absolute wrong thing to say to
a gsport journo but… I’m not a sports fan. I think it stems from the fact that
I couldn’t throw, catch or hit a ball to save my life at school. If pushed –
I’d say gymnastics.
Who are your favourite sports stars?
I guess I’d have to go with Lance Armstrong because of what
he represents. I think his fight against cancer has given a lot of people hope.
What inspires you?
Reading. A good book always challenges and
makes me think differently about the world.
Who are your role models?
My mom is my biggest role model. She has designed a great
life for herself and lives life to the fullest. I hope I have half as much
energy as she does when I am her age.
What is your greatest ambition?
To be a mom one day
