Courtnaé Paul did the country proud over the weekend as she was crowned the top B-Girl at the Red Bull BC One Cypher South Africa. The breakdancer went head-to-head with her competitors and came up tops in the event in Johannesburg on Saturday, 23 March 2024.
“I don’t even know where to start, honestly it feels incredible. I didn’t want to put any pressure on myself, it’s been a while since I got to compete on this stage. I came off a couple of injuries, I came off a busy time, from the G-Star launch, speaking at the Forbes conference, training in between, and a couple of injuries and having BC one in Jo’burg for the first time in a while …”
“It just felt like the perfect time to just go in and have some fun and enjoy myself without the pressure, winning was just the cherry on top, I would have been okay with anything! It just feels great, I haven’t won since 2021, and it feels great to have this title back and I think it’s going to set me up for a great year.
“Red Bull BC One is one of the most prestigious competitions for Break Dancing but to able to represent my country on this platform is just … the feeling is second to none.”

The victory now means Paul will represent South Africa at the Reb Bull BC One final in Brazil later this year after the event reaches its final leg in 35 stops around the world. She put her style, originality, musicality, and technical abilities on the show to impress the judges as she made her way to the title.
As Paul mentioned this result will do wonders for her, she is hoping to be at the Olympics in a few months from now. Breakdancing will be part of the Games for the first time and the B-Girl is hoping to be part of the historic event in Paris from July. Surfing, skateboarding, and sport climbing are the other sports that will be making their Olympic debut.
A little more about Red Bull BC One, it is seen as the most distinguished competition when it comes to breakdancing, where contestants from around the world compete for the top prize in different events. The final takes place in Rio de Janeiro at the end of 2024.
