South African-born cricketer turned academic Bronwyn Sumption is bravely battling a rare form of blood cancer, a fight that not only requires strength and resilience but also support from the community.
Bronwyn is a bubbly former cricketer who played under the banner of Limpopo, and took up her dream job at the University of Edinburgh in April 2022, was diagnosed with a rare stage 3, Primary Mediastinal B-cell non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. It is an aggressive form of the cancer, but the brave 31-year old has displayed immense courage and determination in her battle.
Cancer as we all know is a formidable adversary that not only takes a toll on the body but it also presents financial challenges to the patient. Sumption had undergone 6-rounds of intense chemotherapy in May 2023 and the cancer was pushed back into remission in October 2023.
Being the positive person that she is, Bronwyn concentrated on fighting whilst taking extra care during her remission period. Unfortunately, in January 2024, she was given the devasting news that the cancer had returned and she had tumour in her brain.

She was required to have a stem-cell transplant, and the transplant is an expensive procedure especially when one is living and working abroad.
Without having gone to work since May 2023, her medical bills have become somewhat of stress on top of having to remain positive in her battle against the disease.
She is not eligible for government support, as she is in the UK on an ancestry visa, and her sick pay which has assisted so long has come to an end. She is currently unable to work due to her stem-cell transplant.
Sumption has started a go-fund-me account in hope that the public will open their hearts and pockets to her plight, as he battles medical bills as well her fight against cancer.
Any assistance given no matter how big or small helps Bronwyn to be brave in her time of need. Spreading the word of her plight greater amplifies her situation and will hopefully reach more people that are willing to lend their support.
In times of adversity, it is our collective strength and compassion that shine brightest. Let us stand together in solidarity with Bronwyn and show her that she is not alone as she courageously battles cancer.
