Freak Accident Denies Shandre

Newly-appointed national women’s cricket captain, Shandre Fritz, has been ruled out of action for three months after sustaining a neck injury two weeks ago.

Shandre will miss the upcoming home one day series against Pakistan’s women’s team and will be replaced in the squad by Mignon Du Preez from Northerns.

Cri-Zelda Britz will take over the captaincy in Shandre’s absence.

Speaking to gsport about her injury, Shandre said: “I went down to Kimberley to watch the under-19 tournament, as I do every year. We were swimming and diving around, and this one time I dived, it just didn’t go the way I planned and injured my neck. It was a freak accident, I guess.

“Vertebrae 6 and 7 shifted out of place and I have a slight fracture, but the doctor said it could have been worse. It shifted out of alignment and if it snapped, I could have been paralysed. So, I am really lucky and thankful.

“The first thing I asked the doctor is when I can start rehabilitation. I have a hard collar on now, and in a week I will progress to the soft collar, and soon after that I hope to start rehabilitation.

She is expected to be fully recovered within three months, and is hopeful to be fit and in top form by the middle of the year, when South Africa plan to tour Netherlands and England.

gsport wishes Shandre all the best as she recovers from injury.
