Women athletes have claimed four of the 15 medals won so far by Team South Africa at the Paralympic Games in London.

On Tuesday evening, celebrated swimmer Natalie du Toit won gold in the 400m freestyle final (S9).

It was du Toit’s second gold medal at the London Games, and the 12th gold medal of her Paralympic career. She won in a time of 4:30.18.

Du Toit’s success in the pool came after she bagged gold in the women’s 100m butterfly (S9) in a time of 1:09.30 last Thursday night.

Shortly after the South African anthem rang out in the aquatics centre, Shireen Sapiro, who was disqualified from women’s 100m butterfly S10 heats last Saturday, bounced back in style.

She set an African record to win bronze in the women’s 100m backstroke S10 Final, finishing in a time of 1:09.02.

Anrune Liebenberg is the other female medal winner for Team South Africa at the Paralympics. She finished third in an African record and personal best time of 25.55 seconds to snatch bronze in the women’s 200m T46 final last Saturday.
