#GAL2022 Perfectly Wraps Up the Year for Women in Sport

gsport events have become a ‘must-attend’ on the South African social calendar. Throughout 2022, every gsport event hashtag left even the biggest introverts with FOMO. Superstar athletes and icons, administrators, corporate and sponsors, the media – I can only think of one organisation that has the will and determination to gather all these incredible entities under one roof: gsport4girls.

As captured beautifully by 2022 Momentum gsport Supporter of the Year Nakedi Thlathla, who was given the honour of baking the cake and cupcakes for #GAL2022, everyone who was there had an afternoon to remember:

The guest list was packed with South African sporting A-listers who gathered to honour and  celebrate those that grabbed the headlines in 2022 and went on to make it as a Top 10 recipient of the gsport Annual List of Newsmakers .

Marizanne Kapp Named gsport Newsmaker of the Year

Aside from the 10 lucky recipients and their representatives, the event attracted top leaders like gsport Trustee, Hazel Gumede, Brand South Africa Acting CEO, Sithembile Ntombela, Momentum Head of Brand, Charlotte Nsubuga Mukasa and South African Football Association COO, Lydia Monyepao

Workshop 17 in Rosebank was a hive of activity as super stars like Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Eliis, US Open Wheelchair semi-finalist Kgothatso Montjane to rising canoe star Saskia Hockly swapped highlights and learnings as they reflected fondly on 2022.

The hashtags that were the envy of many were #GAL2022 and #CloseTheVisibilityGap. The fourth edition of the gsport Annual List featured the Newsmaker of the Year, Momentum Proteas, Oval Invincibles and Perth Scorchers star all-rounder, Marizanne Kapp as well as 2022 African Artistic Championships Senior WAG Champion and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, Caitlin Rooskrantz.

Reigning Hollywoodbets Super League champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies were also named among this year’s List of Newsmakers and were in attendance. Nonhlanhla Mthandi, attending the event for the first time, representing one of the biggest women’s teams in the continent also lauded the event: “The event was well organized and it was an awesome experience to mingle with some of the biggest names in women’s sports in South Africa. Being in their midst has further motivated me to deliver my best on the pitch whenever I have the opportunity. We wish gsports4girls well in the upcoming year and we look forward to future successes as we grow with them as women in sports.”

Mathlomola Morake, former Orlando Pirates Media Officer and now with South African Football Association was also delighted and honoured to be part of the event:

For up and coming Sports casters, being invited to the #GAL2022 provided them with an opportunity to let loose, mingle and rub shoulders with all the special guests as they seek to grow and carve their space in the media industry.

Letsatsi, Mascot for the Netball World Cup 2023 was also in attendance to encourage everyone to buy tickets for the showpiece event taking place in South Africa in 2023. gsport also used the occasion to announce its #WorldCupWednesday campaign to amplify all efforts to shine the spotlight on South Africa as World Cup country in 2023.

Who would miss a photo-op with the world’s coolest mascot, right now?

As if bringing Letsatsi was not impressive enough, the gsport Women’s Sport Pop Up Museum was once again dripping in silverware belonging to AFCON Champions Banyana, Hollywoodbets winners Mamelodi Sundowns, Kgothatho Montjane’s US Open and French Open semi-finalist gong’s, medals from the Commonwealth Games and Marizanne Kapp’ Player of the Final medal from The Hundred all elegantly placed in the room, finishing the set up with the most prestigious glam.

gsport Newsroom partner, Telkom, used the occasion to amplify its support of netball through the Telkom Netball League and especially after recently announcing its partnership with the Netball World Cup.

Judging by the social media posts, gsport gave room for women in sport to conclude 2022 in style and inspire those in attendance and those that follow @gsport4girls to make 2023 a year to remember, whether it’s on the pitch breaking records or in the boardroom making decisions on which incredible woman to sponsor next.

A fitting conclusion to another year where gsport leaves no stone unturned in the endeavour to shine a deserved spotlight on women in sport.
