Laura Oppel and her Giant Killers team have won the second event in the 2007 Lizzard Tag Series, in 2 foot wind blown surf at St Mikes on the KZN South Coast Saturday.
Led by power surfer Beyrick de Vries and also including Bright Ntuli and Senzo Ngbobo, the Giant Killers beat the Lions, Gobats and Hot Shots teams to win the R2000 first place prize-money.
Devin Lane, Khayelihle Ngcobo and Mthokosize Hlope joined Annie de Vries in the Lions, Chanelle Botha was the rose among Mikey Venter, Vumani Makhanyane and Courtnay Ellish in the Gobats, while Nikita Kekana and Carrryn MacNicol, David Van Zyl and Rudi Oppel were the Hot Shots.
The St Mikes Lizzard Tag series used the team format to determine results, and unlike just about every other contest held throughout the year, there were no individual heats in this event.
In the Lizzard Series, surfers are split into equal teams which feature girls and boys from novices through to experienced juniors, and range from under 10’s through to under 16’s in age.
Surfers in each team came up with their team names, which were used to identify them throughout the event using the International Surfing Association’s Double-Elimination format.
Cheering and whistling were the order of the day every time a surfer paddled out, caught a wave or tagged one of their teammates which made for a lively and entertaining day of surfing.
For many of the participants this was their very first experience of competitive surfing, and they were able to compete against or even be part of the same team as some of SA’s top junior surfers.
Mike Frew, Lizzard’s marketing manager said after the conclusion of the event: "Lizzard is stoked to be associated with an event like this. It is unreal to have youngsters surfing in their very first competition together with some of the country’s top juniors. Some of them could hardly contain their excitement".
The 2007 Lizzard Tag series is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa (SSA), the recognised governing body for the sport. The first event was hosted by Boland Surfing Association at Strand beach in the Western Cape and the St Mikes contest was hosted by Southern KZN Surfing Association.
The final Lizzard tag series will take place on November 24/25 at Pollock Beach in Port Elizabeth and Eastern Cape surfers can enter online at the Surfing South Africa website.
