Glenrose Xaba Close to Record 10 000m SA Titles

South African long-distance runner Glenrose Xaba is close to becoming an eight-time champion in the women’s 10 000m event, after Day 1 of the Athletics South Africa Track and Field Championship at the North West University’s McArthur Athletics Stadium in Potchefstroom took place on Thursday, 30 March 2023.

Xaba completed her race in a time of 33:02;13, after she led from the fifth lap.

The 28-year-old was followed by Cian Oldknow in a time of 33:51;81 and Nwabisa Mjoli – 36:24;27.

Elsewhere, South African Javelin starlet Jo-Ane van Dyk took gold in her event with a throw of 60.97m, almost breaking her personal best of 61.61m. Jana van Schalkwyk walked away with the silver medal with distance of 55.45m, while Charne van Zyl took the bronze with a distance of 49.34.

In the 100m women’s final there was a tight battle between Carina Horn and Thamzin Thomas, but Horn successfully defended her national title taking the gold medal in 11:52 sec, while Thomas followed her in second place in 11:58s and Kayla Murray finished in third place with a time of 11.85s.

Michelle Ngozo won the women’s high jump with a hight of 1.80m, while Yvonne Robson took second place with a hight of 1.75m and Julia du Plessis in third also with a height of 1.75m.
