The South African Sports Confederation and
Olympic Committee (SASCOC) held a lekgotla for Presidents of its National
Federations over the week-end, which focused on developing a Governance
Charter for Sport in South
Africa.
National
Federations are faced with similar issues and challenges in the administration
of the various sporting codes in the country, and the proposed charter provides guidelines to enable sport administration bodies to deal with issues of
governance on a structured and consistent basis.
The proposed
charter also delineates roles and responsibilities of federations, election
procedures and terms of office for board members.
Gideon Sam, chairperson of the National Lotteries distribution agency for sport
addressed the issue of coordinating a funding approach that will ensure growth,
quality of performance and transformation.
The National
Lotteries Board is one of the major funders of sport in South Africa. The
Presidents Council decided that a professional lobby forum be formed to
engage the government, National Lotteries Board and the private sector
with regard to sport funding. A number of criteria for funding of sport
were laid down to ensure honesty, transparency and due process.
