It is time to make your vote count as we go in search of our four Leading Ladies of the year. Voting is open for the next 30 days, and the winners will be announced at a glamorous awards breakfast at the beginning of August, when gsport will also unveil our 2009 Hall of Fame inductee.
We have 48 vibrant Leading Ladies candidates across four Leading Ladies categories to choose from. The categories are Woman of the Year, Woman in Media, Style Star of the Year, and gSTAR of the Year.
Last year, Motorsport South Africa MD Beaulah Schoeman walked away with the gsport Woman of the Year title, and had this to say about her win.
”This Award is not only an inspiration and motivation for me to continue to do my very best at all times, but it also makes me more determined to ensure that women in motorsport – and their achievements – are recognised and appreciated.
“I will always consider this Award as one of the biggest highlights and greatest achievements in my career, and the magnificent crystal award will forever occupy a very special place in my heart – and home.”
Sports producer and presenter, Renelle Naidoo, won the 2008 gsport Woman in Media Award, and was surprised, to say the least.
“I was surprised to say the least and after the shock had sunk in, I was pleased that my work has not gone unnoticed. I’m thankful to those who voted for me and to Kass and Ryk for providing a platform for women in sport to be recognised.”
Popular model and actress, Tanya van Graan, fought off stiff competition to take the 2008 gsport Style Star of the Year Award, and was suitably chuffed with her win.
“To have won the gsport style award was truly an honour. It is a great feeling to get recognition from such a credible source. I was very surprised to have won, most of the nominees were woman I admire for their style.
“It was such a beautiful event, not just the set-up of the hall, but the positive energy that filled the place. I take my hat off to every one that was involved with putting it together, it was truly special.”
Our 2009 Woman of the Year nominees are tennis legend, Laura le Sueur, veteran women’s netball administrator, Di Woolley, South Africa’s most capped women’s hockey player, Lindsey Wright, President of Squash South Africa, Alison Burchell, head of women’s football in South Africa, Anastasia Tsichlas, CEO of the Nashua Titans, Elise Lombard, founder of Billabong South Africa, Cheron Kraak, President of Women’s Golf South Africa, Erica Lefson, popular boxing promoter, Mbali Zantsi, Gauteng’s cycling road commissioner, Jill Bezuidenhout, former Comrades winner, Cheryl Winn, and community rugby hero, Dorothy Tsotsobe.
Leigh-Ann Paulick and Crystal Arnold from SuperSport are nominated for gsport’s 2009 Woman in Media award along with Bettie Kemp from RSG, Carly Weinberg, who is now with the E News Channel, Beverley Maphangwa, producer of the Discovery Sports Centre with Robert Marawa on Metro FM, PR queen, Olivia Jones, veteran cricket commentator, Vicky Masuku, Publisher of SA Woman Golfer, Shelley Galliver, Al Jazeera’s Xolelwa Majeke, cycling journalist, Eunice Visagie, and SABC Sport duo, producer and director, Karen Plath, and veteran presenter, Cynthia Tshaka.
gsport’s 2009 Style Star of the Year nominees are former Miss South Africa, Tansey Coetzee, Channel O’s Nonhle Thema, socialite and businesswoman, Uyanda Mbuli, So You Think You Can Dance presenter, Sade Gilberti, teenage musical sensation In-Cha, Idols presenter, Liezel van der Westhuizen, FHM model, Shashi Naidoo, current Miss South Africa, Tatum Keshwar, Nicky Greenwall of etv’s Showbiz Report fame, 5fm’s Elana Afrika, entertainment report, Jennifer Su, and Idols winner, Sasha-Lee Davids.
The 2009 gSTAR of the Year nominees are tennis star, Channel Simmonds, netball sensation, Precious Mthembu, national hockey star, Vida Ryan, paralympic star, Emily Gray, Banyana Banyana player, Kylie-Ann Louw, cricket all-rounder, Alicia Smith, swimming sensation, Kathryn Meaklim, rising golf star, Monique Smit, boxer, Noni Tenge, cyclist, Cherise Taylor, road running veteran, Grace D’Oliveira, and Springbok rugby star, Yolanda Meiring.
