The SPAR South African women’s hockey captain, Marsha Marescia, says she’s planning to do something special for her mom today because she deserves to be spoilt.
Marsha says her mom, Marian, has been influential in her career, and was her first hockey coach and mentor.
“I hope to have as much passion for the game as she does. She is always honest with me and always prepared to help me become a better player and team mate.
“My mum played and coaches hockey at the highest levels. She is currently the SA under 18 coach and most of the girls that I meet that have had the opportunity to be coached by her love her to bits. She is a great role model and definitely somebody I aspire to be like.”
Marian is also a teacher at Bryanston High, and also coaches the school’s first hockey team.
“The role of captain is challenging although I enjoy the opportunities to lead the tam. I believe that very little changes when you become a captain- yes there are certain responsibilities that come with the territory but it should never change who you are as a person.
“There are many other leaders within the team and I appreciate them and the contributions that they make. We all have different styles and this helps to relate to all in the team.”
Marsha is looking forward to the tip to Dublin early next month where SA will play in a four-nation tournament.
“I believe that we should win our games against Ireland and Scotland. I think that for the game against Germany we would like to win as we know we can do it, however we need to be realistic and understand that the Germans are different to the Irish and Scottish. They will all be tough games to play, but we do best when we focus on the process as well as take one game at a time.
“I would like to see some of our players take the next step and not only be national players but become international players that countries ranked higher than us see as a threat.
The SPAR SA Women’s Hockey team will gather at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria on Monday June 4 for a short training camp before leaving for Ireland on Saturday, June 9.
