Port Elizabeth
lived up to its reputation as the Friendly
City when it welcomed close to a
combined 200 surfers and officials participating in the 2007 O’Neill SA Junior
Championships to the Pipe at Pollock
Beach.
The surf
destination’s reputation as the Windy
City rang true, forcing
surfers to battle a 50km/h easterly on-shore gale, as well as compete against
each other, while life was made miserable for the judges in the tower too.
Despite the
washing-machine type conditions, there was some outstanding surfing from a
number of the surfers representing the eight participating teams.
Weather
predictions for Friday are that an off-shore wind should blow in, and clean up
the surf for the last two days of the event.
Day Two will
feature the first round of the U14, U16 and U18 girls events in addition to the
second round of the U14, U16 and U18 boys’ events.
The O’Neill
South African Junior Championships is a premier Surfing South Africa tournament
which determines National Champions in the Under 18, Under 16, Under 14 and
Under 12 age divisions for boys and girls and decides the winning provincial
team each year.
The defending
provincial champions are KwaZulu-Natal with Western Province,
Boland, Border, Eastern Province, Southern Cape, Southern
KZN and the SA Development Academy team all participating. The
