The second and final day of the Kahuna Surf Series event for novice surfers has been rescheduled to take place at Muizenberg Corner on Saturday 14 October after organisers were forced to postpone the contest last Sunday due to the tiny 30cm (1 foot) waves.

The event will resume with the first round of U16 boys heats, the only division not run last Saturday, when proceedings were interrupted by a Great White shark entering the contest area.

All seven categories – U10 mixed and separate divisions for U12, U14 and U16 girls and boys – will then compete in another round, with the combined totals used to determine the top four competitors in each division, who qualify compete in their respective finals.

“Unfortunately the ocean simply didn’t produce the goods for us on Sunday,” said Dene Botha, who organises and runs the annual three event series, which has been designed to foster and encourage novice surfers.

“We’ve studied the long-range wave and weather forecasts for the weekend which indicate that the conditions for Saturday will be better than Sunday, when there will be a stiff SE onshore wind.

“So we’re hoping to wrap up the first event with another day of fun in the sun,” he added.

More than 80 young surfers have entered the first of the three KSS events, with ages ranging between six and 16 years old, and none of whom have previously featured in the final of a national surfing contest.

They include eight from the Micah Surf Club in Macassar, whose entry fees have been waived by the organisers as their contribution to transformation in surfing in the Western Cape.

“The Kahuna Surf Series would also like to thank WP Surfing for their support as they not only sanction the events but also let us use their contest equipment, arrange for the beach permissions and then sponsor the entry fees for six local youngsters from historically disadvantaged communities to compete,” explained Botha.

There are also plenty of other beach activities for the competitors and spectators to participate in such as sandcastle building, impromptu dance displays, give-aways of sponsors’ products and the like.
