Preparing for this year’s gsport Awards has been an overwhelming experience. It is our fourth event and it is such a privilege to celebrate the best of South African women, and honour those who are dedicated to taking women’s sport forward. One of the keys to the success of this event over the past four years has been the buy-in from you.
We’ve been amazed by the more than 100 000 votes cast in the gsport Voting Hall to choose the three finalists each across the four Leading Ladies categories. The 12 candidates are profiled in this issue and now that you have had your say, it is time for our esteemed panel of judges to cast their votes.
It has also been interesting selecting this year’s gsport Hall of Fame inductee. We spoke to various people over the past year since the last awards event and we can’t wait to introduce her to you on the 30th of July. She will join an elite South African women’s club comprising international swimming icon Penny Heyns, eighties netball phenomenon Hazel Gumede and Olympic winner Elana Meyer.
We will also announce the gsport Volunteer of the Year – an individual who promotes women’s sport for little or no gain. Last year, Bronwyn Chudleigh won it for her work with social networking to grow women’s surfing and promote gsport at the same time. In 2007, gsport correspondent Ilse Langhout won for her sterling work to promote women.
Another significant award is the Clinique Personal Account Writer of the Year award. This is presented to an individual who has written an outstanding Personal Account story in the last 12 months. These stories are personal tales of triumph, and are widely read.
This year’s gsport Awards will be hosted at the prestigious Wanderers Club in Illovo, Johannesburg. There will be extensive coverage on the gsport website and gsport’s Facebook and Twitter accounts and various other media platforms.
It is vital that we make time to celebrate our achievements. It energizes us and gives us the strength for the next assignment. Women in South Africa have achieved incredible feats over the years and we have reason to rejoice.
We are approaching a month that will be filled with the goodness of all things women. Soak it up and enjoy that wonderful feeling of being appreciated, acknowledged and loved.
