SWD cricket umpire, Kerrin Klaaste has been appointed to officiate at the 2022 Cricket Varsity Cup tournament, which will take place in Pretoria between 3-5 October.
Klaaste, who was honoured with SWD Umpire of the Season award earlier this year, became the first female to officiate in a league final at the Six Gun Grill SWD T20 and now she gets to officiate a televised tournament for the first time.
Speaking on her appointment, Klaaste says: “For an umpire that is slowly coming through the ranks, it’s one of the most prestigious tournaments to be selected for, so it’s quite high on the list of goals. It would be the first time that I’d be exposed to a live televised game where the stakes are much higher and there are more external factors overall.”
As Klaaste aims to represent South Africa on the global stage, she shares tips for women to break into the umpiring space:
- Mental toughness is crucial so remain calm under pressure and it will assist your decision making.
- Don’t just know the law, understand it and know how to apply it.
- Let the game flow.
With that said, another phenomenal super star umpire who is a force to be reckoned with is Lauren Agenbag. Klaaste applauds Agenbag for what she is doing on the global scene.
“Lauren Agenbag has definitely set the tone for what we have to offer on the female forefront. She’s surpassed any expectations of where an umpire at her age could see themselves, and she continues to do so. Proud would be an understatement, and I look forward to getting the opportunity to work with her again in the near future.”
