This week on the gsport IG Live, gsport Content Lead Celine Abrahams was joined by Sport PR and Communications consultant, Lerato Malekutu-Zondi, as they highlighted the current landscape of the sport media space post the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
Over the years, Malekutu-Zondi has played a vital role in the sport industry, which include being Media Manager for the Proteas Men’s team and working as PR Manager during the 2020 Momentum gsport Awards campaign.
Having overcome many challenges, Malekutu-Zondi shared how she rised above: “Every job comes with different pressures and challenges, but personally for me it’s important to bite one piece of the pie every time.
“If you really just take each task and challenge as it is and you complete it and tick it off once you complete it, it really helps ease the pressure. It makes you feel like you have accomplished those small steps.”
Speaking on the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, Malekutu-Zondi said it was one of those tournaments where they gave themselves big goals to achieve and having to ticked down one box at a time helped accomplish each of their targets.
She also mentioned that the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup was a new product for South Africa and that a lot of journalists said it was a first for them to watch the Momentum Proteas live.
“Speaking to the editors and senior journalists helped us promote the event.” – Sport PR and Communications consultant, Lerato Malekutu-Zondi
She also mentioned that the tournament has changed the perspective of the media and that more people were covering the event and how the Momentum Proteas played throughout the tournament.
She touched on how the sport media landscape in South Africa has certainly become younger: “You have a lot of younger journalists, who have been exposed to sport, you don’t have your traditional journalists who have only been exposed to certain sports.”
There were many lessons drawn from South Africa’s hosting of the World Cup, which Malekutu-Zondi highlights as tips for the upcoming ITTF World Table Tennis Championships as well as the Netball World Cup.
