SuperSport School Sports Star of the Year winner Lesedi Khunou shares her experience of attending the 2022 Momentum gsport Awards and how winning has inspired her.

The rising star is a four-time AGN Discus champion, who has been lauded for her incredible work ethic.

Dazzling in a black ensemble from Just Tonight Josephine, instantly from when Khunou stepped onto the red carpet, she says she soaked in every moment as she looked to have an overall experience of what the awards evening was all about.

The 18-year-old, who is currently busy with her prleminary Matric examinations, reveals attending and winning at #gsport17 has inspired her to continue breaking boundaries.

Speaking to Rudene Hare, Khunou reflects on the awards night and her plans to further her studies in USA.

Lesedi, first up, congratulations on winning the SuperSport School Sports Star of the Year Award. Can you please tell us what went through your mind when you heard your name being called out?

You know, because this is something you only witness on TV, celebrities winning Grammys and other awards ,I think there are absolutely no words to adequately express how I felt. I soon realized seconds after my name was called, I stood up on the platform because an inspiration struck me I felt inspired. It inspired me to want to go and inspire others. It also got me thinking, “Hey girl you can make a difference.”

What was your experience like attending the Momentum gsport Awards?

I’ll admit that I was nervous on the way there. My eyes wanted to soak it all in as I walked on the red carpet at the awards. I’m amazed I didn’t trip because I wasn’t looking where I was going! As everyone arrived, I continued to roam around and examine every little detail, top to bottom. Besides a beautiful space and set up, there was a great ambience and atmosphere. I truly had a great time connecting with guests who shared stories and experiences. I loved it! Thanks to all the photographers, crews, finalists, gsport and everyone involved that helped bring this amazing awards to life.

What is the next step for Lesedi after High School?

I am going to study in the USA next year in August 2023 and take my studies further during that time I would like to use my platform to encourage others to participate in sport. In terms of sport, I would love to fulfill my dream in becoming an Olympic athlete.

What message do you have for other young stars out there?

Believe in your dreams but on the same note nothing comes easy – it is crucial to emphasise the value of perseverance and hard effort. You must be passionate and eager to give your all to the sport you have chosen.

For everything I’ve achieved I’m my life, I am profoundly grateful to have experienced the highs and lows that comes with what I do. It is my hope that my story will inspire all young ladies to strive for greatness and pursue their aspirations with unwavering perseverance. We must keep having great dreams because by doing so, we inspire subsequent generations of women to be equally daring in their endeavours.
