Lize-Marie Leads the Way for SA

South Africa’s women have achieved outstanding results in the water once again, with 19-year old Lize-Marie leading the way with her overall third-placed position against the world’s best in the final event of the 2007 FINA / Arena Swimming World Cup, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

The season-ending event was held from 23 to 25 November 2007, and also prominently featured Keri-Leigh Shaw (sixth overall) and Chanelle van Wyk.

Retief recorded a gold medal in the 50m Backstroke, and silvers in the 100m Butterfly, 100m Freestyle and the 50m Butterfly, demonstrating her all-round excellence.

Keri-Leigh Shaw claimed first place in the 200 metre Butterfly final, silver in the 200m Individual Medley, and a bronze in the 100m Butterfly to reaffirm her strength in the swimming’s power stroke, while Van Wyk’s best finish was fourth in the 50m Backstroke, also recording two fifth places (200m Individual Medley and the 50m Butterfly) and a sixth in the 100m Backstroke.
