Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and UJ Stake Early Claims as Hollywoodbets Super League Gets Underway

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies and the University of Johannesburg each put through four goals to lead the early season log after the first weekend’s action in the 2024 Hollywoodbets Super League, on Sunday 3 March 2024.

First Touch FC Ladies hosted UJ FC at the Baroka Global Stadium at Lebowakgomo, and both sides avoided conceding until the visitors’ Shannon Macomo netted in the 37th minute, with UJ FC skipper Refilwe Maseko doubling the advantage three minutes later for a 2-nil lead at the break.

Lebogang Mamabolo got First Touch on the scoreboard soon after the resumption of play, but Maseko scored again soon after to restore the two-goal cushion, and the result was put beyond question when substitute Gugu Dhlamini scored at the stroke of full time, for the second 3-goal win of the season.

2023 defending champions Sundowns hosted Royal AM for their opening fixture where Boitumelo Rabale, deservedly crowned Player of the Match at the fixture’s conclusion, bookended the hosts’ four goals in the 15th and 67th minutes, with Andisiwe Mgcoyi (in first half extra time) and Nthabiseng Majiya’s goals giving the Brazilians an unanswered four goals to top the league after the first weekend’s play.

Rabale and Maseko are early co-leaders of the of the season’s Top Goal Scorers log with two goals apiece.

In Saturday’s results, Lindelani Ladies made the most of home conditions with a 3-goal win over Thunderbird Ladies, with goals by Nomfundo Xulu and Mbalenhle Tenza and an own-goal by the Birds’ Chwayita Zimba sealing the hosts’ advantage at the Princess Magogo Stadium. 

Durban Ladies FC defended home pride with a 2-nil win over the University of Pretoria through goals by Nthabiseng Mlotshwa and Nomfundo Mdunge, and the University of Fort Hare FC edged visitors TUT Matsatsantsa FC when contributions by Kesha Hendricks and Nosikho Magqaza cancelled an early opening goal by TUT’s Tshogofatso Motlogelwa.

Richmond Utd hosted City Lads and Copperbelt Ladies FC hosted UWC for 2-all draws in their opening ties, while JVW FC at home went down 2-nil to TS Galaxy Queens, when skipper Mamello Makhabane and Busisiwe Ndimeni scored to secure maximum points at the UJ Soweto Campus.
