Mari Rabie was victorious in the women’s category of the event when she crossed the finish line in a combined time of 9 hours, 26 minutes, and 59 seconds. According to Rabie it was a great weekend of racing and she would definitely like to defend her title next year if she’s not racing abroad at the time.

“I had a very nice race, the climbs suited me perfectly,” said Rabie. “It was at the first climb that I managed to break away from Elmien Stander. The route was perfect with lots of jeep track, nice climbs and rocky non-technical sections.

“I come from an endurance background, so the Nelson’s Creek Mountain Bike Challenge was perfect for me,” says Rabie. Elmien Stander obtained an overall 2nd place, while Kasha Dickie finished 3rd.

The 2009 Nelson’s Creek Mountain Bike Festival catered for the entire family. On Saturday and Sunday beginners and novices tackled the shorter loops of 18km and 15 km on fairly flat terrain, while intermediate riders enjoyed the fast 32km and 30km routes through the rolling countryside.

More experienced bikers took on the 54 and 61km trails, which contained a couple of challenging surprises. JP van Zyl from Recycles kept competitors’ bikes in top condition all weekend long with his much needed and appreciated bike washing and maintenance services.

Fun wine tastings, fabulous farm stalls and beautiful scenery ensured that the weekend was filled with entertainment for all. In the evenings competitors and spectators enjoyed a slide show of the day’s action, movies, kids’ entertainment and more.
